A good pillow plays a vital role in how well you sleep. Choosing the wrong pillow could cause headaches, neck and shoulder tension. Many people enjoy the luxuriously plush feel of down pillows, while some sleepers complain of insufficient support around the head and neck.

Sleeping position

Sleeping position is one of the factors we need to consider when choosing a pillow, but it is not a hard rule because all of us switch sleeping positions throughout the night. For example, you might be a side sleeper even if you spend some time sleeping on your back, while the back sleeper shifts to one side sometimes.

Here’s some recommendation for the pillow hardness and height for a different kind of sleeper,

Side sleeper needs a firmer pillow and a pillow on the thicker side, you may search for one which is as thick as the distance between your ear and outside shoulder.

Stomach sleepers need a soft pillow beneath their head. A flatter pillow keeps your head and neck aligned.  Back sleepers want a softer pillow. If you have neck pain, you should look for a pillow that provides additional support, while maintaining the softness that’s comfortable for you.

Type of filling of a pillow

There are three main types of pillows: feather and down, microfibre, and memory foam.

Feather and down pillows remain supportive and comfortable longer than synthetic fillings, but they could become flattened and can be expensive.

Microfibre pillows could be the cheapest option. It can be washed at home, available in hypoallergenic options. But it is not as breathable as others and has a short lifespan.

Memory foam pillows offer even support. It is durable and long-lasting. Its disadvantage is it can be too hot in summer, and some people don’t like the feel.

Overall, you should also take personal factors into account when searching for a new pillow. Comfort is so subjective that you and your partner may find the same pillow doesn’t suit you both. It's best to try out pillows before you purchase them if possible.
